SPRING THINGS, BLUE THINGS 05/26/2011
Spring has sprung, a little too late for the mourning doves out on the fire escape. They had to abandon this nest in early may, hopefully they found a better drawer to nest in. Here are some pics from around the home. A reminder for me to draw as many plants and flowers as I can while everything is growing like crazy. These two gorgeous plants were a gift and I think my favourite things, im sitting right underneath them now. We got the idea from this string gardens site, via this designsponge article on kokedama as its called in Japan. I created this design last summer from weeds collected around Brooklyn. This shows print drying, before being steamed. Sometimes the different stages of the printing process are just as beautiful as the finished print. Plants photographed on a light box. The brief is for a unisex design to be used on Steve Alan's fall collection. The top prize is your design on the range for men's and women's and $2000. Entries are open until April 4 and the Threadless community rates the designs. They are looking entries and also people to vote on the designs. Threadless run comps all the time and are a great platform for getting your work out there in a community of designers. So get your entries in and show some five point love! MILAN AND VENICE 03/12/2010
Ahhhh, sweet gelati memories of visiting one of my beautiful sisters in Italy last Summer. Now thats a holiday, nothing to do but eat fantastic food, walk around in the sunshine and take in all that pattern and did I mention the food? Here are some pics I took on my trip. Lots of great relief work in the architecture and check out those marzipan dentures! DELILAH DEVINE 03/09/2010
The loverly Delilah Devine hails from South Australia and has just opened an etsy shop to share the love with everyone. These whimsical brooches are laser and handcut using wood and vintage wallpapers. I already have the Kookaburra (Aussie bird) brooch in floral pattern but am loving the owl and looking forward to seeing what else pops up in the future. Delilah Devine is also a talented textile designer and has this beautiful blog to boot. ARMORY - FINE ART PATTERNS 03/07/2010
I am so visually exhausted. What a great show the Armory was. Here are some pics from the day - lots of closeups of pattern rather than the whole artwork. I have placed a link for each piece. Photos dont really do them justice and you may want to research the artists work later. My friends father used to play a voting game when we went to art galleries. I think they had played this game since she was a little girl and I love that he was encouraging us to discuss our reaction and relationship to the artworks on different levels. It goes something like this

Back in October I made this felt screen as a DIY project for DesignSponge. Always makes me feel so dang handy to make stuff. Repeating a simple shape can create such an uncluttered yet beautiful design. The weight of the circles warp when hung from the window and produces the most amazing shadow show. Check out some of the other DIY projects they are all very nifty, as is the whole blog. Art mania has descended on New York so I'm off to the Armory show now and looking forward to a walk in the sunshine. WINDOW LETTERS 03/06/2010
Well, I have been on the computer nearly all Saturday as the sun came and went and my shiny new website was born. Its about time to head out for dinner but before I leave I would like to post a little something on one of my favourite applications for patterns, the humble envelope. Envelope security patterns really are about the only good part of opening up the bills. I found this flickr set a while back and have been bursting to share it ever since. A wealth of inspiration and would look great used as mini textural pattern fills or as a patchwork design. I could wax lyrical all night about my love for these patterns. The numbers design is just awesome and I love the almost Japanese design aesthetic of simplicity combined with blue. Who would of thought that envelope had it in it? SHARING IS CARING 03/06/2010
This blog is a journal to document the design process of a patternphile. Its main goal is to catalogue inspirational material I come across. Hopefully this new system serves me better than the self addressed emails I currently use (yes I write my self emails). I hope it also becomes a useful reference for other patternphiles. |
